KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo City Commissioners will be asked tonight to allow a statue of Abraham Lincoln be put in Bronson Park.
Lincoln made his only Michigan appearance in the park in 1856 to campaign for Republican Presidential Candidate John C. Fremont.
The Kalamazoo Lincoln Institute has raised enough money to not only commission the statue, but is ready to set up a trust to pay for its ongoing maintenance.
The speech took place years before Lincoln became a national figure and the statue depicts the future President as he would have appeared then, beardless and younger.
A State Historical Marker noting the Lincoln appearance already stands in Bronson Park.
