KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo Public Safety is going to use $1.25 million in newly-acquired federal grants over the next four years to keep 10 officers on the force.
Chief Jeff Hadley said the cash is welcome, but also said he’s not sure if KPS will hold onto the money.
“The city has gone through significant budget reductions over the last four or five years, and we’re trying to mitigate that in what ever way possible,” Hadley said. “So, this is certainly a help to the city as a whole.”
Hadley said KPS was one of only five Michigan law enforcement agencies awarded money by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Grand Rapids was given $1 million to help fund eight positions. Detroit was given $2.8 million for body cameras and to offset staff costs.
