KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Kalamazoo Valley Museum has opened a new exhibit on author and political activist Helen Keller, the first blind and deaf person to earn a bachelor’s degree.
Bill McElhone directs the museum and said the exhibit educates patrons about how Keller gained knowledge and learned to communicate, despite her disabilities.
“It focuses specifically on geography, science, math and reading,” McElhone said. “You can experience, as a visitor to the exhibit, braille and tactile exhibit expereinces.”
McElhone says “Child in a Strange Country” highlights how braille was developed, and also recounts Keller’s visit to Kalamazoo with her educator, Anne Sullivan, in 1914.
The exhibit will be housed at the facility on North Rose Street through January.
