PORTAGE (WKZO) — A mobile home fire in Portage Saturday morning is being called suspicious, but fears there may have been fatalities have been eased.
The fire was reported just before 5 a.m. in the 5100 block of Kibby Circle in the Colonial Acres Mobile Home Park off Sprinkle Avenue.
Arriving firefighters were greeted by a 30-year-old male who escaped the fire on his own, and who was suffering from smoke inhalation. He told firefighters that there might still be others inside, but by that time a rescue was impossible.
They doused the flames and no one else was found in the trailer.
The Fire Marshal and Public Safety will be investigating the cause because a man involved in a fight was arrested at that address earlier. He was lodged in the County Jail. Authorities will be i
nvestigating to determine if the fire was some sort of retaliation.
Anyone with information is asked to call Portage Public Safety at 329-4567 or Silent Observer at 343-2100, www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.
