KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — An agency that acts as a sanctuary and school for abused and troubled children is getting set to launch a capital campaign to improve its health and wellness programming, and to build a new fitness center and gymnasium.
Lakeside for Children board member Jeff Palmer said the group will publicly kick off its “Sound Mind, Sound Body” initiative Thursday, after taking private donations during the drive’s so-called “quiet phase.”
“$2.3 million is our goal and we’re well on our way toward that,” Palmer said.
Palmer said there’s a need to improve athletic facilities at Lakeside Academy’s campus on Oakland Drive.
“They’re 12 to 18 years old and need to be active,” he said. “Our gym was built in 1960.”
The 11,500 sq. ft. building will also house classroom space.
