GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO-AM) — Susan G. Koman for the Cure in southwest Michigan has generated around $100,000 for breast cancer research and treatment in 2015, which is down from last year’s pace.
Jennifer Jurgens said donations and Race for the Cure 5K sign-ups are both lower.
“The biggest difference is in the personal fundraising throughrate,” Jurgens said. “But, again, it’s not anything that isn’t happening elsewhere.”
The chapter is not expected to reach its usual $300,000 mark, but Jurgens said they always finish October strong.
“We’ve come a long way from not being able to say the word ‘breast,’ to having a whole month of pink and breast cancer awareness,” she said.
Though fewer people are donating to Komen, Jurgens says more charities have joined the fight against the disease in recent years.
