LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The Michigan Department of Treasury says consumers will need to start keeping an eye on their online purchase receipts, now that a new law has taken effect requiring businesses on Michigan soil to charge the state’s six percent sales tax at checkout.
Agency spokesperson Terry Stanton says shoppers will have to calculate the levy and send it to the state themselves if they knowingly shop on a website where the statute is being defied.
“We expect that taxpayers will remit or believe or what they believe, or what they expect to owe to the state,” Stanton said.” That’s why the receipts are so important, because you can know exactly what your responsibility to the state might be.”
Stanton says the requirement still doesn’t apply for shops with no presence within Michigan’s boundaries.
