KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A 26-year-old man is behind bars at the Kalamazoo County Jail after a high-speed chase where two vehicles were struck, including a Kalamazoo Public Safety squad car.
Investigators say they were trying to catch a pair of vehicles that were involved in a shots fired call before 7 p.m. Tuesday in the 1300-block of Riverview. Officers began following one of the vehicles at East Michigan Avenue and King Highway.
Officers tried to stop the vehicle at Amsterdam Street and North Westnedge Avenue, but the man reversed into an off-duty officer’s vehicle and fled westbound.
He then, according to a press release, struck a police cruiser at high speed, causing significant damage to both vehicles. The driver was then taken into custody.
No injuries were reported.
The driver, who is listed from Kalamazoo, was arrested for fleeing and eluding, carrying a concealed weapon, and for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He also picked up an additional felony firearm charge.
It’s not clear what happened to the second vehicle.
