BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Two semis crashed and burst into flames on I-94 near the Firekeepers Casino exit on Thursday night which forced a nearly five hour shutdown of the eastbound lanes.
The crash took place at about 8:15 p.m.. The eastbound side of the freeway was shut down until just before 1:30 a.m. Friday morning.
It’s being investigated by the Michigan State Police. No further information on the crash was available Friday morning.
The crash came a night before MDOT shuts down a four mile portion of I-94 to allow for demolition of the 15 Mile Road bridge over the interstate as part of their $210 million project to rebuild I-69 between Charlotte and I-94 in Marshall.
Work is scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. Friday night and end by 6:00 a.m. on Monday morning.
MDOT says I-94 will be closed between M-311 (Exit 104) and I-69 (Exit 108) from 8 p.m. Friday through noon Saturday, with traffic detoured onto M-311, Michigan Avenue, and I-69.
The southbound I-69 ramp to westbound I-94, along with the westbound collector/distributor ramp west of the westbound I-94 ramp to southbound I-69, also will be closed from 8:00 p.m. Friday night through 6:00 a.m. Monday morning. Detours will be posted.
