SOUTH HAVEN (WKZO-AM) — Fences have been erected in front of the historic South Haven Lighthouse as construction crews work to restore the century-old structure.
The repairs are expected to take a couple of weeks.
The three-story tower takes a pounding every time the winds get heavy. The lighthouse itself is made up of 112-year-old steel and rivets prone to corrosion, and every few years it requires maintenance.
The lighthouse is such an important part of South Haven’s identity that it even appears in the town’s logo. That’s why they have been able to raise nearly $300,000 privately to refurbish the landmark.
Work has already begun to sandblast, prime, repaint and, in some cases, replace the steel that has rusted inside. They also plan to remodel the room which holds the beacon at the top of the tower, replacing old waterproofing and glass.
Exterior work is planned for next year.
