KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – With another school year is winding down, Kalamazoo Public Schools officials say, like school officials throughout the country, they have seen increased levels of violence and vandalism caused by the trauma of a two-year pandemic.
Last night, trustee Tandy Moore asked for an actual list of all the acts of violence that have occurred in the district, just so they have the data. Her motion failed to get a second, with the other trustees agreeing that dealing with discipline is the superintendent’s job, not theirs.
Superitendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri says they have put unprecedented programs in place this year in response, adding security personnel, social workers, behavioral interventionists., and clinical psychologists, in addition to collaborating with local police and social service agencies.
Raichoudhuri says it just takes time to work, and they have to analyze the data to make sure it’s working.
There have been more reports of fights this week and a non-functioning gun was taken from a student at Kalamazoo Central High School Wednesday.
