BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — Binder Park Zoo has welcomed two new furry friends.
Spokesperson Kari Parker says a pair of dingoes are getting comfortable in the zoo’s former bald eagle exhibit.
“They’re very energetic, they’re just about three years old — it’s a female and a male,” Parker said.
The dog-like critters are closely-related to the Asiatic wolf and used to be prevalent in Australia. However, Parker says conflicts with farmers and ranchers have caused numbers to dwindle.
“There’s really only about 200 pure dingoes left in the wild, so conservationists are working to protect that pure breed of dingo,” Parker said.
Students from Gordon Elementary were the first to see Yango and Airlie on Wednesday. The animals arrived at the zoo Tuesday.
