KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Kalamazoo City Commission will be asked to give away a fleet of busses worth tens of millions of dollars and other property on Monday for the sake of intergovernmental cooperation, as the new transportation authority slowly begins the year-long process of transferring assets.
The city may own them, but the transfer really won’t mean any financial loss for the city. That’s because the city didn’t really pay for them.
“About 50 percent of the revenue is from state and federal grant dollars, and then the other portion is through voter-approved millages, then 20 percent is through fares,” Kalamazoo Transportation Director Sean McBride said.
The transportation complex on north Rose that includes the bus garage, metro transit offices, the train station and the attached bus transfer facility will remain city property, but will be leased to the new authority.
