KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – In Egypt it was building pyramids. In France it was cathedrals and palaces. In Kalamazoo, the monumental task seems to be turning one way streets back into two ways.
Another small step has been taken in the effort, which has been talked about for decades.
Monday night The Kalamazoo City Commission approved a $1 million contract with Wightman and Associates to plan how to turn Kalamazoo Avenue back to two way traffic.
City Traffic Director Anthony Ladd says they have to rebuild everything from the 100 year old storm drains up.
Utilities Director Jim Baker says they need the two year study before they can figure out how much it will cost. Right now all they have is an old estimate of around $30 million, and that’s just to convert Kalamazoo Avenue from Harrison to Douglas.
After that they will have to try and figure out how to pay to convert Michigan and Westnedge Avenues and Park Street, which are all longer and more complex.
