LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled that a repeat offender from Kalamazoo behind bars for robbery and conspiracy should have been given a parole hearing two years ago because of his good behavior in prison.
Nathan Hayes was given 20 to 30 years prior to the enactment of Michigan’s Truth in Sentencing law. That meant he was still eligible for time off for good behavior.
That’s something new and could have implications for other inmates who began their sentences before 1998. The state estimates that number at 100 to 200 inmates.
