BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) — 27-year-old Derek Horton was ordered to serve between 15 and 30 years in prison on Monday in Calhoun County Circuit Court after he entered a no contest plea to second-degree murder.
Horton was charged in connection with the death of 27-year-old Amber Griffin who was his girlfriend.
Another murder charge was dismissed as part of the plea agreement which included the 15 to 30 year prison sentence.
The Battle Creek Enquirer reports Horton was also given credit for 682 days already served in jail.
The plea agreement was offered on the second day of a trial on a condition Horton took investigators to where he left her body.
Griffin’s remains were found in a wooded area near Waubascon Road and Limit Street.
She was last seen alive at a Battle Creek house party in June 2020. Prosecutors charged Horton with murder days after she was reported missing.
