KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Should Kalamazoo area elections officials try harder to train candidates on how to run for office?
The question follows the disqualification of two Kalamazoo City Commission candidates last year and the near disqualification of a County Commission candidate this year.
All three were Black and all three wondered if there wasn’t something racial behind their problems getting on the ballot.
Kalamazoo County Clerk/Register of Deeds Meredith Place denies that, saying the rules are the rules. Place says her staff conducted three sessions on campaign financing for potential candidates.
But she says they are limited in what they can do because underfunding by the County Board of Commissioners has left them short staffed.
Place says other comparable counties have election teams, but she can only afford to dedicate one staffer to election management,
The next election is the August Primary, Tuesday. August 9.
