KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools will lift their mask mandate next Monday, but only for recess and other outdoor events. But on May 30, they will also make masks optional indoors.
Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri is recommending the changes despite a new spike in cases statewide and the fact that one of their high school proms turned into a spreader event, putting several seniors into quarantine just as they were scheduled for finals.
She says May 30 will put them past a couple of key dates in the school calendar, including the end of state mandated testing and the last day of class for seniors so they won’t miss finals and their graduation ceremonies.
The Board of Education and staff have been under increasing pressure to lift the mandate, and heard even more negative comments from parents last night.
The district will still recommend that students mask-up, but won’t be requiring it for the last week-and-a-half of the school year.
