KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County Clerk Meredith Place says the Tuesday, May 3 election ran smoothly, and turnout might have been higher if it hadn’t been raining all day.
She says a little less than one in five registered voters participated, approving the County Law Enforcement Millage and the Kalamazoo Schools Bond issue by wide margins, and deciding other local school funding questions.
“We did see a turnout upwards of over 18% in the unofficial results,” said Place who stressed that more people voted by mail than at the polls.
“The breakdown between election day votes and absentee votes, we saw about 74 vote by absentee ballot.”
While the debate continues in Lansing about the final format that may be used for early voting, Place says it appears that both Democrats and Republicans support giving voters the option.
