KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The mayor of Portage is having trouble supporting an initiative that would decriminalize the possession of an ounce or less of marijuana within the city.
While on WKZO-AM on Tuesday, Pete Strazdas said the proposed change in code could create enforcement problems.
“Portage Public Safety officers will be frustrated or confused that the local ordinance says its decriminalized because state laws trump local laws,” Strazdas said.
But he also said voters will send a clear message to legislators if they say “yes” to the question.
“It’s more of an opportunity for citizens to express their interest with the other 18 or so communities in Michigan that have passed that,” Strazdas said.
The measure will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot.
