KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Mayoral candidate Kris Mbah says he thinks he knows how to solve Kalamazoo’s deficit problem.
The local non-profit operator and resident of the Millwood neighborhood says the city’s Blue Ribbon Revenue Panel isn’t doing enough to find the cash needed to bridge a projected $2.9 million shortfall in 2016.
“We don’t have any strategies to find and generate that revenue,” Mbah said. “But, we have 392 city properties off the tax roll. Why don’t we put them back on the open market?
The gap is expected to grow to $6 million by 2020.
Mbah is the lone candidate running against incumbent Bobby Hopewell next Tuesday in Kalamazoo’s first race for the position in nearly a century.
