BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — Work is wrapping up to rehab the main 10,000-foot runway at W.K. Kellogg Airport in Battle Creek.
The top layer of the runway, which is a porous friction course designed to grip the tires of landing aircraft, had reached the end of its useful life and had to be replaced.
It was done in three phases, doing 3,000 feet at one end, then the other, permitting use of the runway to continue. It had to be shut down while the center 4,000 feet was paved this week.
The runway in Battle Creek is longer than at most airports, which is important for cargo firms and Duncan Aviation to bring in larger planes and for the Air National Guard Base.
The total price tag on the project was just over $6 million.
