KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A semi driver told Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputies he fell asleep at the wheel and began to drift off onto the shoulder of westbound Interstate 94 near the entrance to the Kalamazoo Business Loop mid-morning Friday, causing him to slam into another disabled semi on the side of the freeway.
The resulting debris from the collision shut down all lanes of I-94 for two hours.
The at-fault driver, 58-year-old Robert Schaffer of Southgate, was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital for treatment and is expected to survive. He was cited for careless driving.
The other driver was not in his rig at the time.
