ALLEGAN COUNTY (WKZO) — Grief counselors will be on hand at South Haven’s L.C. Mohr High School to help students cope with the loss of the football team’s quarterback who, just weeks ago, was elected homecoming king.
Allegan County Sheriff’s deputies aren’t sure why, but they say 17-year-old Devon William-Lamarr Smiley’s vehicle left Blue Star Highway early Sunday morning and struck a tree.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The wreckage was discovered by an Allegan County Sheriff’s deputy on routine patrol about 1:20 a.m. Sunday in the 1200 block of Blue Star Highway in Ganges Township, north of South Haven.
So far, investigators have ruled out speed and alcohol as possible causes.
