KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Tuesday is election day, and some ballots are busier than others in Kalamazoo County.
Kalamazoo, Portage and Parchment will be deciding races for city councils and commissions.
The entire county will be voting on a one-tenth of a mill request to expand a successful housing program for homeless families and children countywide.
Portage voters have the busiest ballot, deciding all of the above and a referendum on marijuana that Mayor Pete Strazdas says cannot be enforced.
“State laws trump local laws, so, at the end of the day, people will still be arrested for small quantities of marijuana,” Strazdas said.
Portage voters are also being asked to approve millages totaling $144 million for two new middle schools, new swimming pools and two new high school football stadiums.
