KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo Metro is set to use $250,000 dollars in funding to improve safety at the Transportation Center following the November 2021 shooting that left three people injured.
Both Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids were awarded more than $20 million in federal funding earlier this month to strengthen public transportation as part of the Infrastructure and Jobs Act.
Funding for safety improvements will go towards getting cameras on buses and inside the facility, along with glass barriers and radio systems as well, and more safety training for staff.
Kalamazoo Metro Transit Executive Director Sean McBride says that Kalamazoo has been looking to improve security since before November’s shooting and will continue to use the money to maintain and add more safety upgrades.
He went onto say that federal funding will also be used to modernize and expand fleets by purchasing new buses and railcars, address repair backlogs, increase services for residents, and make other critical infrastructure upgrades necessary to bolster public transit in the community.
