SOUTH HAVEN (WKZO-AM) — Students at South Haven High School wore purple and gold Tuesday to honor homecoming king and football quarterback Devon Smiley, who died in a weekend wreck in southern Allegan County.
Troy Ayotte, who is the head coach of the football team, said Monday that the community is heartbroken.
“Football-wise, it doesn’t matter at all to me,” Ayotte said. “I think it’s tough on a community that lost such a great kid and young man.”
Supt. Bob Herrera said they grief councilors will be at the school all week.
“Usually, what they need is an adult that’ll just sit quietly and listen,” Herrera said.
Funeral services for the 17-year-old Senior are still pending. Investigators say he struck a tree while returning home from a Halloween party.
