KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A special millage to help homeless families countywide has passed.
With 100 percent of precincts reporting, 18,971 votes were cast for and 14,639 were cast against.
Over the six-year life of the millage, it’s expected to help hundreds of families regain self-sufficiently and give hundreds of children a place to call home.
Dave Anderson, Chair of the County Housing Commission, said the exact number it will help depends on their success rate and the size of the families they take on during the life of the bond issue.
It will cost the typical county homeowner about $5 per year, depending on the size of your home.
Anderson said they plan to set up a special oversight board to pick the families, approve bids from local housing organizations and operate the project with minimal overhead.
