KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo Public Schools Supt. Michael Rice has been named Michigan’s Superintendent of the Year for 2016.
The honor was delivered by Chris Wigent, the Executive Director of the Michigan Superintendents Association.
“It is clear to me, as it was to our selection committee, that Dr. Rice is an esteemed leader and an example to others as he works so very hard, as we heard tonight, to ensure a brighter future for the students of Kalamazoo Public Schools,” Wigent said.
Dr. Rice was also applauded by former State Rep. John Stewart who just happened to be at the meeting and is running for the state Board of Education.
“Would you let me tell you that, in southeast Michigan, we are looking at what you are doing? The services that you’re providing for turnaround students and lift-up literacy? Would you let me tell you that Dr. Rice is widely-read?”
Rice gave most of the credit to his staff and the teachers for working hard to make the district what it is.
