GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO) — A do-it-yourself sewer project in the front yard of a home in Grand Rapids ended in death and tragedy when the trench they were digging collapsed.
A husband and father of two, whose name has not been released, was killed and a man said to be the homeowner has been hospitalized in stable condition after treatment for hypothermia.
The two men had successfully avoided disrupting gas and water lines, but a poorly constructed porch that was resting on bricks without a foundation collapsed into the trench trapping the two victims.
It happened about 1 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Taylor Avenue and Grove Street NE.
A number of rescue crews responded and worked together to rescue the survivor and recover the body of the other man.
