KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo city commissioners will meet tonight to salute outgoing members and to swear in newly-elected commissioners and Mayor Bobby Hopewell, who came out on top of elections last Tuesday.
Incumbents Bob Cinabro and Barb Miller chose not to run. Eric Cunningham ran and lost.
Hopewell said he’s excited to get to work with the new crew.
“We’re going to have this group that, I think, we’ll be able to mold and come together and push,” Hopewell said.
Under the city’s new method of electing commissioners, Vice Mayor Don Cooney, Dave Anderson and Shannon Sykes will get four year terms because they were the top vote-getters last week. Jack Urban, Erin Knott and Matt Milcarek will serve two year terms.
When those seats come up for reelection in 2017, it will be for four-year terms, establishing a two-year stagger.
A reception is planned later.
