KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Gov. Rick Snyder was in Kalamazoo on Wednesday to applaud the 10-year anniversary of the Kalamazoo Promise.
He said Kalamazoo was a pioneer, inspiring similar full-ride tuition programs in Michigan and across the country.
“The Promise is one the great innovations that have happened in terms of affordability to have young people get the opportunity to get an education,” Snyder said.
He also challenged other locations to follow the city’s lead.
“When they started this in Kalamazoo, they understood it was about helping the young people be successful,” Snyder said. “But it was also about quality of life for the community and economic development.”
Snyder was a main speaker at PromiseNet at the downtown Radisson Plaza, an annual gathering of Promise-like groups that have popped up since Kalamazoo’s Promise was first made a decade ago.
