KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Members attending this week’s PromiseNet conference in Kalamazoo got a chance to join the celebration with community members Wednesday night to celebrate the ten year anniversary of the Kalamazoo Promise.
Spokesman Von Washington Jr. said a number of communities across the nation have tried to follow Kalamazoo’s example, but the local program is still the most comprehensive and generous.
“Regardless of your family’s income status, we’re going to pay tuition and fees,” Washinhton said.
He also said the movement continues to spread.
“Close to 50 communities are doing Promise work, but, to be honest, we hear about a new one every day,” Washington said.
They say they learn as much as they teach at the conferences because everyone is still experimenting, working out bugs and finding a way to make the program work in their community.
