ST JOSEPH (WKZO-AM) — Normally, it’s the warm sandy beaches and fresh water that draw tourists and photographers to the lakeshore, but Thursday it was the violence and majesty of Mother Nature.
Dozens of spectators braved the wind and spray to watch as the big waves crashed on-shore.
“The wind out here is crazy, they waves are huge,” one spectator said. “They’re breaking over the pier pretty good, at least 10 feet tall.”
The piers were closed Thursday and may be closed again Friday.
“I think these are probably the biggest waves I’ve seen in a long time,” another spectator said.
There could be even bigger waves as high as 18 feet this morning, as windy weather as kicked up the surf on the big lake.
People are being warned to keep their distance, dress warm and wear something waterproof.
