LANSING, MI — Just a day after severe storms and tornados tore through Texas and other southern states, a statewide tornado drill is set for 1 p.m. this afternoon in Michigan. Sirens will sound across mid-Michigan and the EAS system will be activated for the test on radio and television.
The Michigan State Police are encouraging people to know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning, with a watch being issued when conditions could lead to a tornado and a warning issued when one has been sighted or indicated on radar.
“With an average of 15 tornadoes each year, this is a very real threat to our Michigan communities,” said Col. Joe Gasper, state director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and director of the Michigan State Police. “This drill will give people a chance to make a plan and put it to the test. By planning now, you can be better prepared when a disaster happens.”
This is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Michigan.
