PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Portage Department of Public Safety Police Division is investigating a series of vehicle burglaries initially reported around 11:00 PM on Wednesday, March 16. Officers responded to the 6300 block of Sitka Spruce on reports of unlocked cars being broken into. Upon arrival, officers apprehended several individuals fleeing the scene. During initial investigation, a second group of individuals connected to the burglaries were located and apprehended.
At that time, Portage officers recovered a vehicle that was reported stolen from the City of Kalamazoo, along with several stolen credit cards and an unregistered handgun.
A total of nine vehicles were reported entered at eight different addresses which spanned along Sitka Spruce Street, Anna’s Lane and Baywood Drive with additional related reports expected to come in during the next few hours.
All of the reported vehicles were unlocked prior to the thefts.
A total of seven juveniles and one adult were linked to these crimes. Seven of the individuals involved are Kalamazoo residents and one is a Portage resident. Three juveniles were lodged at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Detention Facility with charges sought for resisting and obstructing police, breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, and possession of stolen property.
