KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Following a shoot out with police that left an Edison Neighborhood home destroyed, Kalamazoo City Commissioners tonight are scheduled to sign off on two negotiated settlements this evening to cover the costs of the 16-hour stand-off.
Department of Public Safety Chief Vernon Coakley said at the time that they had to knock out walls at 1523 Washington Street to safely get at gunman Alex Rawls.
Home owner Gary Apps will get $117,000 for the home, and will get to keep the property.
Renter Andrea Youngs will get over $33,000 in compensation. That’s in addition to the assistance she received from local housing and charitable organizations immediately after the incident in November.
Rawls, who was a suspect in a separate shooting, killed himself rather than be arrested.
The city will pay another $20,000 to $30,000 to clear debris from the lot.
The city’s insurance fund will cover the costs.
