KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Kalamazoo City Commission will get its first look Monday at a new ordinance that will regulate the use and construction of new sports and entertainment venues in the city.
The review comes after residents in Westnedge Hill began to object to plans by Kalamazoo College to build a new football field with lights, practically in their own backyards. The complaints were likely sparked by years of living near Waldo Stadium.
The new ordinance will set limits on the number of night games per year that can take place at the school’s athletic complex and how late the lights and speaker systems can be used.
Homeowners and school officials reached a compromise after a series of community forums and presented the ordinance to the planning commission.
Commissioners will receive it for first reading Monday and, if all goes as planned, it will be approved after a public hearing in two weeks.
