KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – According to a new report, Kalamazoo’s population is sharing the city with several deer herds. The authors of the report say it’s time the city do something about it.
A survey in the report shows most residents don’t have a problem with deer but some do. Especially homeowners in west side neighborhoods near the city’s two nature preserves.
Jackie Eatmon is one of them.
Last night an ad hoc committee submitted a lengthy report on the problem to the Kalamazoo City Commission. Spokesman Peter Kershner says solving it will be up to the city, and its residents.
City Staff is already working on preliminary recommendations to set up an information website, allow higher residential fencing and provide a carcass removal service following car-deer collisions.
City Planner Rebeka Kik.
A number of residents attending last night’s Kalamazoo City Commission meeting made it clear in comments to the commission that deer culls should not be allowed.
Deer management has been a volatile issue in other towns where aggressive strategies have been tried, and Kalamazoo city officials hope to avoid their mistakes.
