LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The Michigan Chamber of Commerce has come out against legislation that would provide huge tax breaks to a Nevada-based company proposing to move into the abandoned Steelcase Pyramid near Grand Rapids.
They want lawmakers to tap the brakes before granting Switch relief for its proposed $5 billion data center project.
Tricia Kinley, the senior director of tax and regulatory reform with the chamber, claims the legislation is too costly for Michigan and isn’t designed to hold anybody accountable.
“We are trying to raise those concerns in the legislative process,” Kinley said. “Unfortunately, these bills are moving extremely rapidly.”
She also says it gambles with Michigan’s future.
“There is absolutely not one guarantee of jobs,” Kinley said.
Republicans say the changes would benefit all Michigan data companies and would give the state tax rates comparable with neighbors.
Switch will go elsewhere if a deal isn’t cut by the end of the year.
