KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo City Commissioners tonight will formally consider a proposal for a double digit increase in water and sewer rates.
It would apply to the many thousands of customers in the city and in neighboring townships who are hooked to the regional systems.
Utilities Director Jim Baker says the 14% hike in water rates and 12% increase for wastewater services are needed to maintain and upgrade the system.
One complaint has come from Bell’s Brewing, who say they will lose part of the benefit of installing their own organic pretreatment system, and that other firms will be discouraged from doing the same because of a proposed two-year billing cycle.
