KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo City Commission held a special session on Saturday morning, February 19.
This meeting took place ahead of their normally scheduled session for Monday, February 21.
Officials met at the local restaurant The Foundry on 600 East Michigan Avenue at 8:30 a.m. to discuss the city’s top priorities and how they should spend community resources.
Topics ranged from where and how to allocate city, federal, and the Foundation for Excellence funds. During the meeting, the city’s housing director introduced an $8 million dollar housing strategy in which $3.5 million dollars will go toward new affordable housing. Officials say that about $2.7 million dollars will be slated to go toward homeowner and rental property repairs.
Also in the meeting, members of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety brought up the growing problem of gun violence in the city and said that they were directing their efforts on those who were driving the violence by providing more resources and programs to address trauma and engage the at-risk population.
Unlike other city commission meetings, this session was held in person only, and not streamed online.
