HOMER (WKZO-AM) — A man prompted a lockdown Monday at Lillian Fletcher Elementary in Homer after he arrived at the school with a holstered gun for the second time in two school days.
When confronted by a staff member on Friday, he declared he had a right to pack heat. He then left.
School officials conferred with Calhoun County Sheriff Matt Saxton, who advised them to meet with the parent and talk about his behavior. When he returned for a meeting Monday, he was still wearing the gun.
The man left after the school went into lockdown.
Saxton said he may seek a disorderly conduct charge against the man, but, under Michigan law, he does have a right to open carry, even in a school.
A state Senate committee has approved bills that would ban open carry, but allow concealed guns in schools. It has stalled after polls revealed overwhelming opposition.
