LANSING (WKZO-AM) — There is still no vote on the tax cut plan for data centers, but Michigan House lawmakers are scheduled to debate the bills Wednesday.
Similar legislation has already passed the Senate, aimed at luring Nevada-based Switch to the former Steelcase Pyramid near Grand Rapids.
Other data centers were added to the bills after there were complaints from those firms and their representatives, but Rep. Jon Hoadley, D-Kalamazoo, says it’s not a square deal.
“Switch is going to get what they want for sure,” Hoadley said. “It’s up in the air whether the other data centers will get individual tax breaks, because it will be up to each individual unit.”
It’s just one reason House leadership may be finding it difficult to assemble a majority. Several Republicans also oppose the idea on principle.
Switch officials have said without the tax breaks approved before Christmas, they will take their five-billion dollar investment to another state.
Hoadley said Thursday is the last scheduled day of session. If the issue isn’t dealt with by then, they could be back for a marathon session next Wednesday.
