KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Over the objections of Republicans on the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners, a slim majority has voted to require that all members wear masks during meetings, until health officials say it’s safe.
Despite plastic screens, air purifiers and social distancing, some board members, including Jen Strebs, who has health issues have been reluctant to attend meetings because of the danger. She made the motion.
The motion passed 6 to 5.
Failing to wear a mask could result in a commissioner being censured for violating board rules, according to county attorney Matt Nordfjord.
The rule take effect at their next meeting.
Strebs has found an opinion under the American with Disabilities Act that will permit her to attend meetings remotely, which she says she plans to do until it’s safe to return.
