LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A local lawmaker and others around the state are calling on Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to work with federal and Canadian officials to end a vaccine mandate on truckers in light of the ongoing protests at the international Ambassador Bridge crossing in Detroit.
State Representative Matt Hall, whose district covers Calhoun and portions of Kalamazoo County, says the trickledown has started to impact Michigan’s economy with shift cancellations and limited hours at numerous auto production facilities.
“As has been the case the past two years, we are seeing the negative impacts that some of these misguided government mandates are having on people in our state,” said Hall, of Marshall. “Our state economy and the jobs of many people throughout Michigan rely on goods moving into and out of the state. Over $1.8 billion in goods cross the U.S.-Canada border each day. Unfortunately, government is getting in the way – in a big way – and the disruptions will be felt by many hard-working people and their families if a more sensible road forward isn’t found soon. Gov. Whitmer must act.”
The letter asks that Whitmer work with the president of the United States, the Department of Homeland Security and Canadian partners to rescind vaccine mandates for truckers crossing the international border with Canada.
A total of 30 legislators signed the letter.
