KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — City commissioners say they’re going to need a second budget session to finish hammering out next year’s spending plan for Kalamazoo.
That means, when the group holds its public hearing on the matter next Monday, the document will still be a work in progress.
Mayor Bobby Hopewell says they have been able to avoid painful cuts in programs by cutting staff and costs, but they’re running out of options.
“We continue to cut, reduce spending,” Hopewell said. “Since, I think, 2002, (we’ve cut) $25 million.”
The commission held its first meeting on the budget Monday.
The group also talked about options for covering a $500,000 deficit in the city’s solid waste budget, but opted to get leave the discussion open to get more information.
