KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A tiny community with half a dozen tiny homes will be going up in Kalamazoo.
It’s a collaboration between a local non-profit and the Northside Association for Community Development to help a group who have real problems finding housing on their own.
A tiny home fits all of the requirements for living into 600 square feet or less.
Gwen Hooker with Hope Through Navigation says the plan is to not only put a roof over the heads of folks with a troubled past, but to provide them support services to turn their lives around, with the homes primarily for ex-offenders and former drug addicts.
She says it’s taken a lot of persistence to make it happen and is modeled after a successful tiny homes community near Detroit.
Kalamazoo City Commissioners approved a $100,000 grant for the project this week.
They plan to begin construction soon on the tiny homes on land near North and Westnedge Avenues.
