KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Western Michigan University is not expecting to lose significant money this year by allowing its football team to take part in the Bahamas Bowl, compared to the over $400,000 the school lost last season by participating in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
Athletic Director Kathy Beauregard said ESPN is picking up several expenses.
“They’re actually paying for our plane, we have 120 comp rooms at the Atlantis hotel, all of the tickets for the bowl are ours – any money we make off the sale of the bowl is ours,” Kathy Beauregard said.
Beauregard says WMU also isn’t responsible to buy tickets allocated to the school that went unsold, which is usually one of the biggest athletic department bowl expenses.
The team kicks off against Middle Tennessee State at noon on Christmas Eve.
