KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — If you need gas, especially for weekend travel, you may not want to wait to fill-up.
AAA of Michigan says holiday travel is getting a big shot in the arm, partly because gas prices are so low.
It may also contribute to a boost in retail spending this Christmas season.
Over the weekend, gas prices nationally have dropped just below $2 a gallon for the first time since the height of the great recession, when demand plummeted.
GasBuddy.com analyst Patrick DeHaan expects the low prices to stick around until spring, when summer blends hit the pumps. That’s when refineries will shift production to the higher-priced but less-polluting formulas.
DeHaan says the national average could dip as low as $1.85 before it bottoms out.
Right now, the average statewide is about $1.83. The average in Kalamazoo is $1.79.
